FIRST AID TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Ontario employers are required to provide appropriate first aid training, equipment and trained personnel at each workplace under WSIB Regulation 1101. In most workplaces, the required level of training is based on the number of workers on a shift:

1–5 workers: Basic First Aid (formerly "Emergency First Aid")
6 or more workers: Intermediate First Aid (formerly "Standard First Aid")

Employers must also ensure that at least one properly trained first aider is available whenever work is being performed, with enough trained staff to maintain coverage across shifts, breaks, absences and different work areas.

Certain industries — including child care, construction, aquatics, recreational camps, confined-space work and other higher-risk environments — may have additional or more specific training requirements.

FIRST AID KIT REQUIREMENTS

Ontario employers must provide appropriate first aid supplies and equipment that are readily accessible whenever work is being performed. Employers may meet the first aid kit requirements of WSIB Regulation 1101 by using kits that meet the CSA Z1220 workplace first aid kit standard, with the type and size of kit selected based on workplace hazards, number of workers and accessibility. Additional first aid stations or equipment may be required for larger or more widely dispersed workplaces.

AEDs are strongly recommended for many workplaces, but they are not generally required under Regulation 1101. A notable exception is certain Ontario construction projects: as of January 1, 2026, projects with 20 or more workers that are expected to last at least three months must have an AED available and at least one worker present who is trained in CPR and AED use.

Naloxone (Narcan) must be available when an employer knows, or ought reasonably to know, that one of its workers is at risk of an opioid overdose in the workplace. Where this requirement applies, the employer must maintain a naloxone kit and ensure a properly trained worker is available while workers are present.
